Ferrwood Music Camp returns for another season of harmony, growth, joy

As the summer sun returns, so does the unmistakable spirit of Ferrwood Music Camp. Once again, its wooded grounds will echo with the sounds of laughter, music and community as young campers gather to learn, perform and grow — on stage and beyond.

Now nearing its 60th season, Ferrwood stands as a testament to the power of dreams, dedication, and music to transform lives. Each summer, campers hone their musical talents, take part in outdoor adventures and bond over shared melodies. Under the devoted leadership of volunteer director Casey Herseim, a selfless ensemble of instructors and volunteers give their time and talents — ensuring every child has the opportunity to grow both musically and personally.

The camp’s foundation was laid in 1967 by Father Joe Ferrara, who first leased the once-abandoned “Fresh Air Camp” from the County Commissioners. Driven by a profound love for children and music, Father Joe built Ferrwood into more than just a camp — he built a community.

“He believed that while he may not turn every child into an accomplished musician, through music he could help create a better individual for life.”

That belief lives on in every lesson taught, every value shared and every joyful note echoing through the trees.

Father Joe’s presence is still felt — under the pines where campers laugh, in the music that swells on warm Friday evenings, and in the quiet pride of those who return year after year to make Ferrwood possible. Whether through a campership, volunteer hours, donated food and provisions, or sponsorships, the spirit of service and music lives on.

Ferrwood opens its heart with free outdoor concerts, where students perform for the community in what has become one of the region’s most cherished summer traditions. This season, concerts will be held on July 11 and 18, beginning at 6 p.m. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy a family-style dinner served at 5 p.m. in the camp’s dining hall.

Each year, a Ferrwood Music Camp logo is designed by campers and featured on T-shirts and other apparel, available for purchase at ferrwood.org. Visit the website to explore the camp’s history, view photos and videos, and order your 2025 apparel. The site offers a rich journey through Ferrwood’s past and present.

Ferrwood’s continued success is made possible by the CAN DO Community Foundation, which adopted the camp as a legacy project and has helped nurture it for more than 25 years. Founded in 1992 to support projects that enhance the quality of life across Greater Hazleton, the Foundation follows a model grounded in Conservation, Preservation, and Reclamation (CPR): Breathing new life into the community.
