It’s
impossible to describe Ferrwood
Music Camp without first
describing its founder, Rev. Joseph Ferrara, known and loved by many
simply as Father Joe. When Father Joe arrived in Hazleton as a young
priest, his “orders” from Msgr. Molino of Most Precious
Blood Church
included getting his kids "off the streets and out of trouble." He used
his musical talent to forge a program for area youngsters, starting
them
in Music Education as early as possible. He used a simple instrument
akin to the flutophone to lay
the foundations of music theory, notation, and scales. Over the years
Father Joe’s ambition and good will led to the creation of the
Hazleton Philharmonic
Orchestra
and Hazleton Philharmonic Chorus. Eventually, the demand for more
musicians led to the opening of the Ferrwood Music Camp in
1967. Read
