It’s
impossible to describe Ferrwood
Music Camp without first
describing its founder, Rev. Joseph Ferrara, known and loved by many
simply as Father Joe. When Father Joe arrived in Hazleton as a young
priest, his “orders” from Msgr. Molino of Most Precious
Blood Church
included getting his kids "off the streets and out of trouble." He used
his musical talent to forge a program for area youngsters, starting
them
in Music Education as early as possible. He used a simple instrument
akin to the flutophone to lay
the foundations of music theory, notation, and scales. Over the years
Father Joe’s ambition and good will led to the creation of the
Hazleton Philharmonic
Orchestra
and Hazleton Philharmonic Chorus. Eventually, the demand for more
musicians led to the opening of the Ferrwood Music Camp in
1967. Read

Joe at our Parent Page.
Purpose
The purpose of Ferrwood Music Camp is to provide quality music instruction
over the course of a ten-day period of time emphasizing
both the theoretical and historical background of music,
including a focus on reading, composition, ear training, and analysis.
Ferrwood Music Camp was always deemed by its founder, "a vacation with a purpose." With that same intention in mind, Ferrwood's Director, staff and faculty strive to provide campers with an unforgettable musical experience during their one or two-week stay at the camp. Ferrwood is a place where new friendships are not only cultivated, but also continue to blossom and mature with age. Campers not only form bonds with one another, but also with their staff and faculty. To be a camper is to be a sponge for five or ten days, absorbing the instruction, material, atmosphere, and splendor only a place like Ferrwood could hope to offer in such little time. To be a teacher, a counselor, or a volunteer is to be a mentor, coach and role model to an age range from seven to eighteen. It provides campers and staff alike with unforgettable experiences and invaluable training. No doubt about it, the mystique lives on and continues to draw scores of campers, young and old, new and returning, each summer. Those who work for the camp do not view the position to be
'just another summer job' or a job they could take or leave. Instead, applicants beg to be rehired year to year, solely due to a newfound love of the experience in its entirety from Sunday afternoon through Friday evening.
It is a place where campers not only learn how to better themselves as musicians, but also where campers learn how to better themselves as people through the art of music making.

Ferrwood Music Camp 2012 Scholarship Applications
"To me music is the reason I wake to a new day, and the safe place I can go when
feeling sad, lonely, or scared. Music is the safety in my life, for I know that music will never leave and it will never let me down."
Susan Funk, 2010 scholarship winner
2012 Scholarship Information
Please take the time to read the terms for Ferrwood scholarship applications!
Every year, Ferrwood Music Camp receives donations and contributions that allow us to present a limited number of qualifying campers
with a scholarship opportunity to attend Ferrwood for one week either as a day or resident camper, depending on the nature of the scholarship.
The number of scholarship applications have increased from year to year. 2012's scholarship deadline is Saturday, April 28th. ALL scholarships must be RECEIVED by this date
in order to qualify. Applications that are received in the mail after this date will NOT be considered. Ferrwood Music Camp staff and/or faculty are responsible for reading, judging and ranking
all scholarship applications. All applications are kept anonymous until after final ranking is completed. If you received a scholarship in 2011 to attend Ferrwood Music Camp, you will not be eligible to apply for a scholarship in 2012.
If you received a scholarship prior to 2011, you are eligible to once again apply for a scholarship for the 2012 term.
The camp director and Philharmonic Board of Directors offer final approval/denial of the scholarship committee's recommendations.
There are several applications per year, so answer essay questions to the best of your ability. Winners will be notified by mid-June. Goodluck!
